On 1 April Chief Secretary to the Treasury Darren Jones told the Financial Times that the crunch point for Sizewell C was coming in just 10 weeks, at the conclusion of the government’s three-year spending review.
The reality is that the government faces a great many stark choices, including expected - and unexpected - challenges, such as the whims of the Trump administration and the need to balance the books. Already there is an outcry about cuts to welfare benefits, and Defence spending has needed a big increase.
There are also other choices that could help us move closer to net zero, reduce household energy bills and create sustainable jobs in every part of the UK. A recent report by Stop Sizewell C and the Green New Deal Group called for cancelling Sizewell C and putting the money saved into the Warm Homes Plan to achieve these objectives.
